Tanning Bed!!

So, E wanted me to take her to tan one afternoon this week. (I tan on occasion, when getting ready for a trip or night out. I am not against it for adults. Just growing children) In case I haven't mentioned it enough she is 14! My reaction was NO FREAKIN WAY!! Because that is my first reaction to most any question I am asked!!! (lots of exclamations points)

I told her I have spent the last 14 years of her life slathering her in sunblock and no.....not gonna help her fry her pretty skin.

I don't want to judge those who think this is OK. (HA) Its not right for my child--she is a child and I would no more give her a glass of wine with dinner.

What do you think about this subject??? I need some input.

  1. I personally am a NO.

I got skin cancer from being a tanner. It's just not a habit I would start with her. I could show her some gross pictures of my scars..

  2. NO NO NO NO NO NO on the tanning beds. However, the spray tans like Mystic Tan are fantastic. They last for about a week, they give you nice color and a bit of a bronzy glow, but they don't hurt/age your skin. Plus, it's fairly inexpensive. I do it before I have a big event/night out I'm going to.

Sadly, I haven't needed to do it in quite a while. sigh. Think I'll go cook dinner now.

  3. I think that's a tough question, only because you do it, and she's at an age where she wants to start doing more adult things. It's probably going to be much harder telling her no, but that it's ok for you. Even though I get the alcohol analogy...there isn't an "age limit LAW" like there is with drinking and smoking to help back you up.

My personal opinion is no to everyone for tanning beds, regardless of age. Like Rocksee said..skin cancer, people. But, that's just me. I think lotion tanners have come a long way from the orange streaky skin we used to get. Let her try that...and you can help with the backside so it's even.

    Just my .02 worth :)

  4. When I was 8 years old, my mom taught me how to tan outside with baby oil. They let me start using a tanning bed at 14 year old.

Looking back....I wish they wouldn't have done that. I am very light complected, Scandinavian background and my Dad has been battling skin cancer for 6 years.

I'm pretty sure it is only a matter of time before I have skin cancer. In fact, I need to go get a check up and make sure....

    JUST SAY NO!

  6. Well I have to admit that I did let mine go at 15 5 times before the winter formal last year. This year she chose to use a self tanner for winter formal but I am letting her tan for prom. She is dark completed so I hope she will be ok in the future.

  7. Hi, I just found your Blog through Kelly's. My dearest friend died of Melanoma at the age of 40 leaving behind 2 small children. She tanned and loved to be in the sun. What you do for your children now will determine if they get skin cancer when they are older. You can read more of her story here: http://karincarter.blogspot.com/
Not only should we use sunscreen you need a good quality one and most of the stuff in the CVS is junk. Blue Lizard is good. It is pricey, but it is cheaper than skin cancer.
Your house is beautiful. I'm gonna poke around for more ideas. Thanks for sharing. Beth
